The New York federal prison where financier and intercourse offender Jeffrey Epstein has been found dead in what has been ruled a suicide has been ordered to shut down, for the time being, amid reports of numerous infractions, including filthy conditions.
The City Correctional Center (MCC) in New York City, which housed Epstein as well as several high-profile bad guys such as Mexican drug lord Joaquin ‘ El Chapo’ Guzman, will not accept any new inmates in the foreseeable future after the conditions there were found to become unsatisfactory.
The closure was ordered by the Bureau of Prisons several weeks after Deputy Attorney Common Lisa Monaco visited the facility for an assessment as reports regarding squalid conditions, understaffing, and also a chronic lack of security collected.
In a declaration on Thursday, the Proper rights Department said the facility would be closed at least temporarily while authorities addressed the issues at MCC.
“ As part of this effort, the Bureau associated with Prisons has assessed ways necessary to improve conditions on the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in New York City, ” the DOJ said.
The facility has been thrust into the spotlight after Epstein’s death on August 10, 2019. The disgraced financier, who was on committing suicide watch at the time, was found unresponsive in his cell, as the two guards who were designed to check on him every fifty percent hour were found to get been sleeping on duty or browsing the internet.
While Epstein’s death has been officially ruled a committing suicide, the circumstances surrounding it immediately gave rise to conspiracy theories, with critics from the official version pointing away that the financier was proven to have rubbed shoulders with all the rich and powerful, such as former US President Bill Clinton and the UK’s Prince Andrew. The phrase ‘ Epstein didn’t kill himself’ was coined soon after, rapidly becoming a recurrent trend on social media.
The particular guards at the center of the investigation into Epstein’s death were spared incarceration after they hit a plea deal, acknowledging to falsifying prison information throughout their shifts, and were ordered to complete a hundred hours of community support.
They were also purchased to cooperate with the analysis by the Justice Department’s inspector general into the circumstances associated with Epstein’s death. More than two years into the probe, the inspector general has yet to release a report.
In addition to the Epstein scandal, the notorious corrections facility has been under fire for failure to stop the spread of Covid-19 and provide urgent medical care to inmates. A report by Dr . Homer Venters, who inspected the jail in May 2020, found “ signs of severe pest infection” in the jail, including in tissue used to isolate Covid-19 sufferers.
“ The presence of mice, rats plus roaches throughout the facility signifies a basic disregard for sanitation and infection control that casts doubt on ability or commitment of the MCC to keep a sanitary facility, ” he wrote in the report.
