Surprise Video: Bronx Community Furious After NYC Sanitation Confiscates, Throws Away Street Vendor’s Fresh Produce
Bronx has highest rate of food insecurity in the country, with 1 in 3 people unable to guarantee when they can eat next.
Surprising video out of the Bronx displays sanitation workers throwing away carton after carton of refreshing produce from a local merchant into garbage trucks as an outraged crowd protested the particular move.
Diana Hernandez Cruz, an immigrant, said she’d been working on the fruit stand for five years.
“ I’m here in the rain, I’m here in the snowfall, ” Cruz said. “ I’ve been working to provide meals but also to take care of my family. ”
Cruz informed local news that 2 police officers called the sanitation division Thursday to remove her produce after she couldn’t provide a permit.
“ When I saw the sanitation department… all the food. It produced me so angry, ” she said.
The New York City Department of Sanitation provided the statement defending its actions, saying the food needed to be thrown away “ for the safety from the community. ”
“ This video shows a small portion of an unfortunate situation, where abandoned material would have to be disposed of for the safety of the community. The Department associated with Sanitation is committed to our own mission of keeping streets and neighborhoods safe, clean, and healthy, ” the department said.
But others say the Cruz is being “ criminalized” simply for trying to make a good living.
“ Instead of giving her a chance to formalize her business, obtain a permit, she is being criminalized, ” said Carina Kaufman-Gutierrez of the Street Vendor Project.
Notably, the particular South Bronx has the highest food low self-esteem rate in the united states, with 37% of occupants food insecure due to higher poverty and widespread joblessness due to COVID.
This is just another example of the government asserting control over its constituents still struggling to make ends meet in the aftermath of the city’s stringent COVID lockdowns and mandates.
