Bill Would Give U. S. Government ‘Kill Switch’ in All Brand new Cars
Law might “prevent or limit motor vehicle operation, ” give police force access.
A piece of legislation that was quietly included in the infrastructure bill signed by Biden would give the U. T. government access to a ‘ kill switch’ linked to police force in all new vehicles.
Under a section in the bill that talks about ‘ impaired driving technology’, the new system would “ passively monitor the overall performance of a motor vehicle to accurately identify whether that operater may be impaired. ”
If a blood alcoholic beverages level above the restrict is detected, the system would “ prevent or restrict motor vehicle operation. ”
In other words, a kill switch.
“ Probably the worst part about the eliminate switch is that it would have the backdoor, allowing the police as well as other law enforcement agencies access, ” writes Ken Macon. “ The speculation is that the warrant would not be necessary to access the kill change. The other problem with backdoors is that they are accessible to cyber criminals. ”
The meaning of ‘ driver impairment’ could also be applied in a more vague sense, opening the door for many kinds of abuse.
It’s not inconceivable that in the future, such schemes could be connected to Chinese-style social credit score applications which punish people who exhibit the ‘ wrong’ opinions’ by limiting their access to their own vehicle.
The likelihood of this would be heightened if transport move towards a method of communal renting of vehicles, where a certain private rating has to be met just before a customer is allowed to make use of such services.
