Authorities at a school in Az have egg on their faces after they falsely accused the black DJ at a PTA event of wearing black face.
The incident happened at a PTA fundraiser for the Scottsdale Unified School District upon April 9, where DISC JOCKEY Kim Koko Hunter have been hired to provide music for your event.
A on Instagram filmed by DJ shows him roller skating around the party outfitted in 70s attire and wearing an afro wig.
Pursuing the fundraiser which successfully brought in more than $300, 000, two school officials penned letters complaining about the DJ putting on blackface.
In an email addressing the officials’ concerns, the Hopi PTA president reportedly responded, “ I would like to set the record straight. The **** PTA hired a black man to be our DJ. Please share with me how this is [culturally] not aware? I know no apology may undo this image, and so i will not be offering one. ”
A single official who wrote the main, Stuart Rhoden, who is also black, doubled down on his false accusations on Facebook, claiming the DJ may have used skin darkener to look blacker.
“ Let me be very clear, a Black man, evidently in Black face is an entirely different discussion than a White person. However I did not state that the person was White. It was assumed that was my intent, and perhaps it had been, but nonetheless, looking on his WIKIPEDIA page (photos below), it appears at the very least he is in darker make-up if not ‘ Dark face’ or I am totally mistaken and it’s the light of the patio, ” Rhoden wrote on Facebook.
Rhoden is an instructor from Arizona State University, but also works with the Scottsdale college district’s Equity and Addition Committee, according to the Daily Mail .
Another school official, co-chair from the Scottsdale Parent Council’s variety, equity and inclusion panel Jill Lassen, also wrote an email accusing the PTA of promoting racism by hiring a blackface DJ.
Hopi PTA director Megan Livengood responded to Lassen’s complaint by indicating, “ The DJ that the Hopi PTA hire was, in fact a Black man. ”
Here’s Livengood’s letter to Lassen, via the Arizona Daily Independent:
I am deeply offended by this e-mail even with the included apology. The Scottsdale Parent Council is an organization that states encourage diversity and addition; accusing the Hopi PTA and myself a hiring a DJ that participated within racist behavior is absolutely towards your mission. The DJ that the Hopi PTA hire was, in fact a Dark man. It is insulting that you simply feel myself or PTA condone racist behavior or even encourage it by publishing on social media. After this type of successful event to support the school it’s disheartening to to (sic) believe in firm we pay to be component of (SPC) would send out this kind of aggressive response without exploring the facts first or simply picking up the phone to discuss. Your accusations are false and harmful on both the PTA level and a personal level. I am aware the goal of the Scottsdale Parent council is to unite the particular educational community and you are doing it complete opposite. I will encourage Hopi PTA not to be part of this group in the future.
I anticipate you to share my reaction with anyone you have contributed your initial email with. I do not like false rumors starting about a school I love and spent countless hours supporting.
Lassen responded with an apology, admitting, “ You are right, we should’ve reached out plus inquired before making such claims. ” “ SPC” refers to the Scottsdale Parent Authorities.
Talking with The Traditional Circus podcast , Mister. Hunter laughed when asked if he’s ever put on blackface, before admitting he’s worn black circles about his eyes during his time as a mascot.
“ So because sense yes I have, yet have I ever completed the minstrel show kind of blackface? Absolutely not. ”
