CIA Chief: No ‘Practical Evidence’ That Russia Will Nuke Ukraine

Despite alarm within Kiev, William Burns doesn’t foresee Russia deploying technical nuclear weapons.

CIA Director William Burns told economic Times conference on Sunday that US intelligence organizations haven’t seen any  “ practical evidence”   that  Russia  will use tactical nuclear weapons within Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously claimed that Moscow  could use such weapons.

“ We shouldn’t see, as an intelligence community, practical evidence at this point of Russian planning for the deployment or even potential use of technical nuclear weapons, ”   Burns outlined at the conference in Washington DC, repeating a similar assessment he or she made at the beginning of April.

However , Burns additional that in his opinion, Putin  “ doesn’t think he can afford to lose [the conflict], ”   and the US should therefore  “ stay really sharply focused”   on the potential nuclear threat regardless.

The particular Kremlin has insisted that it will not deploy nuclear weaponry against its neighbor, along with Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexei Zaitsev stating on Fri that  “ Russia firmly abides by the concept that there can be no victors in a nuclear war, also it must not be unleashed. ”

Nevertheless, Zelensky said last month which he was  “ convinced”   Russia might use chemical or nuclear weaponry to win victory within Ukraine, calling for the globe to  “ become ready”   for that possibility.

Western media outlets possess also  speculated   about the possibility of such a nuclear strike, citing Russia’s placing of its nuclear deterrence forces on high alert at the outset of the Ukraine issue, and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s warning that outdoors powers interfering with Russia’s war aims would face consequences  “ certainly not seen in [their] entire history. ”

Speaking to Newsweek on Thursday, Russia’s ambassador in Washington, Anatoly Antonov,   said   that it was Moscow  “ that in recent years offers persistently proposed to United states colleagues to affirm that there can be no winners within a nuclear war, thus it will never happen. ”

Unlike the kind of warheads mounted on Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, tactical nuclear weaponry are smaller, low-yield products that can be dropped from aeroplanes, fitted to short-range missiles or fired from artillery items. Although no internationally-recognized definition exists, their yield generally varies from less than 1 kiloton to 100 kilotons. For reference, the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima during the Second World War had a yield of fifteen kilotons.

Russian federation, which possesses around 700 more nuclear warheads compared to US,   claims   that it can use nuclear weapons in the event of an initial nuclear strike on the territory or infrastructure, or even if the existence of the Ruskies state is threatened by either nuclear or regular weapons.

The United States, according to the Pentagon’s the majority of recent  Nuclear Posture Review , says that will its nukes are intended to serve as a deterrent to nuclear attack on the ALL OF US and its allies, but their use may also be considered in  “ extreme circumstances to defend the vital interests states or its allies plus partners. ”
