Child Formula Shortage Hits Canada

Households are struggling to procure specialized baby formula as supply-chain issues hit North America

Baby formula provide shortages in the US have began to have an effect on Canadian families, that are now struggling to procure breastmilk substitutes.

A baby-food crisis lately hit the US as already existing supply chain issues had been exacerbated by a major product recall by Abbott Nutrition, which voluntarily pulled through shelves three of its brands of powdered baby formula right after reports of bacterial infection plus illness among infant customers, including two who passed away.

The nationwide spokesperson for the Retail Council of Canada told local media that some shops have struggled to maintain a stable supply of formula since 2021.

Loblaws, a supermarket chain in North america, has stated that the supply chain issues and Abbott recall have left holes in the shelves and affected its ability to stock certain kinds of formula, CBC reports. The business noted, however , that it acquired so far managed to find options and procure formulas from other vendors.

Even so, some Canadian families are still finding it increasingly challenging to secure alternatives to Abbott’s hypoallergenic formula and sometimes end up having to drive numerous kilometers, or even across the US-Canada border, to procure the product for his or her children.

She furthermore highlighted the fact that some family members are sticking to specialty formula despite their children not actually needing it, saying that  “ a good number of parents using these products don’t have a diagnosis associated with dairy allergy. “   She added that several parents are using the specialty formulations simply because of advice from buddies or out of an overabundance of caution.
