Much like a Tx law passed last year that the Supreme Court upheld, legislation does not enforce any felony penalties. Instead, it enables any citizen to prosecute abortion providers or anyone who helps a woman get an abortion.
“ I promised Oklahomans that will as governor I would sign every piece of pro-life laws that came across my desk and I am proud to keep that promise today, ” Stitt said in the statement. “ As soon as life begins at getting pregnant is when we have a obligation as human beings to do everything we can to protect that baby’s life and the life of the mother. That is what I believe and that is what the majority of Oklahomans believe. ”
The law comes in the wake of a leaked out Supreme Court ruling which is set to overturn Roe sixth is v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that protected can certainly rights to have an abortion with no excessive government interference. That decision is expected to officially be released in the next few weeks.
The law will not only influence women in Oklahoma looking for an abortion. Women through Texas had been crossing the particular border in large numbers to find abortions after Texas Chief excutive Greg Abbott passed a law that bans abortions six weeks after conception.
Multiple Republican declares have been pushing anti-abortion laws in preparation for the Supreme Court ruling. According to the ACLU, 26 states are likely to prohibit abortion once Roe v. Wade is overturned.
Stitt had already signed a six 7 days ban earlier this 30 days and another ban is set to take effect this summer. That will law will make it the felony to perform an child killingilligal baby killing, punishable by up to ten years in prison and contains no exceptions for rape or even incest.
Illigal baby killing providers across the state have got previously said they will shut down once the law is authorized. Prior to the bill’s signing, the particular ACLU Oklahoma chapter promised to fight the law in court.
“ The majority rights and the majority vision can’t ever overturn and usurp minority individual legal rights, and that is what we’re viewing, ” Tamya Cox-Toure, the executive director associated with ACLU Oklahoma told the local ABC affiliate after the legislation passed the state legislature.
The abortion ban is not the only controversial bill Stitt signed recently.
