New Zealand PM Calls For Censorship & Gun Control Throughout Harvard Address

Jacinda Ardern demands tech companies “recognize their power” to eliminate the “scourge of disinformation. “

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called on tech companies to censor the particular “ scourge of disinformation” during an address to Harvard University graduates.

With the Uvalde mass shooting still new on Americans’ minds, Ardern cited the Christchurch capturing in 2019 in the girl Thursday address as trigger for her government to prohibit “ military-style semi-automatics and assault rifles” and enforce online censorship.

“ We knew all of us needed significant gun change, and so that is what we did, ” Ardern said. “ But we also knew that if we wanted real solutions to the issue of violent extremism online, it would take government, civil society and the tech companies themselves to change the particular landscape. ”

Arden then called on social media platforms to develop “ responsible algorithms” to censor “ disinformation” and “ make choices and decisions for us” about what information we see online.

“ The time has come for social media companies and other online providers to recognize their particular power and to act onto it, ” Ardern said.

“ That means maintaining their own basic terms associated with service. That means recognizing the role they play in constantly curating and framing the online environments that wish in. That algorithmic processes make choices and choices for us. ”

“ At best that means the user experience is individualized, but at worst it means the user experience can be radicalized, ” Ardern continued. “ Let’s start with transparency within how algorithmic processes function and the outcomes they provide. But let’s finish having a shared approach to responsible methods, because the time has come. ”

“ Whenever facts are turned into fiction, plus fiction turned into fact, you stop debating ideas so you start debating conspiracy, ” she added.

Ardern then ridiculed “ keyboard warriors” who disseminate information or content the lady doesn’t like.

“ In my mind, when I read something especially dreadful on my feed, I imagine it’s written by a lone person, unacquainted with personal hygiene practices, dressed in a poorly fitted super-hero costume – one that will be baggy in all the wrong areas, ” she said.

“ Keyboard warrior or not even though, it’s still something that continues to be written by a human, and it’s really something that has been read simply by one too, ” she added.
