Russia’s Biggest Bank Blocked From SWIFT

Sberbank says the most recent Western sanctions will have no impact on its operations

Russian financial giant Sberbank has been disconnected from the SWIFT global monetary messaging system under a new set of sanctions approved by European Union leaders on Monday.

“ This sanctions package includes various other hard-hitting measures: de-Swifting the biggest Russian bank Sberbank, ”   European Council main Charles Michel announced adopting the EU summit.

The official added that the most recent penalties also include banning 3 Russian state-owned broadcasters, and also sanctioning individuals allegedly responsible for war crimes in Ukraine.

Disconnecting Sberbank, Russia’s biggest bank with regards to assets, from SWIFT is just not expected to affect its domestic operations, as international funds had already been restricted with the previously imposed sanctions, based on the lender’s press office.

“ Sberbank is definitely operating as normal. The primary restrictions are already in place. Disconnecting from SWIFT does not change the current situation in worldwide settlements. Domestic transactions do not depend on SWIFT and will be performed by the bank in the standard mode, ”   the Russian lender said.

In April, Russian Central Bank governor Elvira Nabiullina said most Ruskies lenders and 52 international organizations from 12 countries had received access to the device for Transfer of Financial Messages (SPFS), the country’s alternative to SWIFT. The regulator also said it programs to keep the identity associated with payment system members key.
