Mexican President’s Absence at Peak of the Americas an Embarrassment for White House

The exclusion of market leaders from Cuba, Nicaragua plus Venezuela – all leftist-governed nations known for running afoul of US foreign policy : was the final straw designed for Mexico.

“ I can inform people of Mexico that I will not go to the summit, ” Philippine President André s Manuel Ló pez Obrador  introduced Monday  of the Summit from the Americas that the US can be hosting in Los Angeles. “ I won’t go to the summit  because not all countries in the Americas are invited. ”

Axios   has  described it as   “ the blow to President Biden , who is seeking to reassert U. S. influence in Latin America and the Carribbean, which have become more closely tied to  China  in recent years. ” The summit kicked away Monday, and will go through this particular Friday. Biden wanted to utilize it as a show of ‘ unity’ under regional US leadership, but with the Mexican leader’s glaring absence, it’s obviously anything but.

There has been fierce debate over the listing of invitees for weeks, but the  exclusion of leaders from Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela  – all leftist-governed nations known for running afoul of US international policy – was the final straw for Mexico.

“ There can not be a summit if all countries are not invited, ” Ló pez Obrador informed a  press meeting . He said International Minister Marcelo Ebrard goes in his place. “ Or even there can be one, but that is to continue with all politics of interventionism, ” he additional, also underscoring that Biden is  “ not really respecting these countries’ sovereignty, their independence”   in not inviting all of them.

Joining Mexico’s criticism of the summit had been Bolivia, Guatemala, Honduras, plus Antigua and Barbuda – who have  established   their commanders will not be in attendance at the summit.

This kind of resistance from as essential a country and economic climate as Mexico for a regional summit is proving a good embarrassment for the White House, given that a prime international policy theme of Biden’s has been cooperation among nations to counter Russia and China. Yet particularly Venezuela and Cuba are seen as within especially Russia’s world of influence.

Last month the Mexican president stressed that everybody must be invited” to the summit in order to promote and ensure “ the unity of all America. ”

This also as he’s planning to personally press Biden on the matter in an potential upcoming  White House visit:

Ló pez Obrador said he hopes to visit the particular White House in July to talk to Biden about the  “ integration” of American countries , using the goal of  developing something similar to the European Union .

Amid the Russian war within Ukraine and resulting strain on global energy, the Biden administration has sought to bring Nicolá s Maduro’s Venezuela “ in from your cold” as it tries to touch ‘ alternate’ sources of oil.

Because of this there was hope among Caracas supporters that Venezuela would be invited to the Summit of Americas, but that prospect has proven early.
