Syria Recognizes Donbas Republics – State Media

The country becomes second to acknowledge the Donbass republics’ independence, after Russia

Syria has recognized the self-reliance of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR plus LPR, respectively), which announced their intention to break away from Ukraine in 2014 plus were officially recognized by The ussr in February.

Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) announced the decision on Wednesday afternoon, citing sources within the Ministry associated with Foreign Affairs in Damascus.

“ Embodying the common will plus desire to establish relations in all fields, the Syrian Arabic Republic has decided to recognize the independence and sovereignty of both the Lugansk Someones Republic and the Donetsk Someones Republic, ”   the report read.

The republics, which together make up the Donbass area, both declared independence through Ukraine in 2014, following a Western-backed coup ousted the democratically-elected president Viktor Yanukovych. Kiev’s military then waged an eight-year war contrary to the two republics, until Russian federation recognized their independence within February, two days before the start of Moscow’s military procedure in Ukraine.  

In September 2015, following  a request through Damascus, Russia started a military operation in Syria, which at the time was engulfed in a war with Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), as well as other terrorist groups. Moscow’s campaign eventually played a significant role in helping the genuine government restore peace in the nation.

In February 2022, Syrian President Bashar Assad stated that he will be ready to recognize the two republics in Donbass. Thousands of Syrian volunteers are participating in Russia’s military operation there.

A number of other countries, including Belarus, Nicaragua, Sudan plus Venezuela, have not recognized the particular Donbass republics, but announced their support for Russia’s recognition.
