EUROPEAN UNION Should Abandon National Vetoes – German Chancellor

Member states should not be allowed to veto bloc’s actions, Scholz says

If the European Union hopes in order to compete in global national politics, it can no longer afford to allow individual member states in order to veto the bloc’s activities, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in an article published by the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspapers on Sunday.

Arguing that the EU should become a geopolitical acting professional, the German leader outlined the importance of unity in European countries in light of the ongoing issue between Russia and Ukraine. He insisted it was time to put an end to the  “ self-centered blockades”   of EUROPEAN UNION decisions by individual users.

“ We simply can no longer afford national vetoes, for example in foreign policy, if we want to continue to become heard in a world associated with competing great powers, ”   he wrote.

Under current EUROPEAN rules, any policy choices within the bloc must be approved by all 27 member claims. However , after countries such as Hungary and Slovakia held up the implementation of the EU’s sixth sanctions package towards Russia due to energy issues, some have called for the bloc’s principle of unanimity to be abandoned.

Last month, EU Commission rate President Ursula von dieser Leyen told Politico the fact that union should ditch the unanimity requirement in issues of foreign policy and really should move to qualified majority voting. She noted that  “ the speed at which things happen”   was too slow which it was important for the  “ European voice”   to become heard and seen with out one single member being able to obstruct it.

In his article, Scholz also stated that the EU had been weakened by  “ permanent disunity”   and  “ long term dissent between member claims, ”   claiming that unity was Europe’s most important response to the  “ modify of times. ”

He suggested that one from the ways unity across Europe and other democratic countries might be achieved was if Germany  “ assumes responsibility to get Europe and the world during these difficult times. ”

Scholz mentioned that Germany could provide together  “ East plus West, North and Southern in Europe”   since it was located in the middle of the particular continent and was a country that  “ lay to both sides of the Iron Drape. ”

The particular chancellor added that it was important to  “ close our own ranks”   in all locations in which Europe has been having difficulties, such as migration policy, Euro defense, technological sovereignty, and  “ democratic resilience. ”

The revolution will not be televised .
