Bannon Found Guilty of Contempt of Congress For Defying J6 Subpoena

Bannon’s attorney calls J6 committee illegitimate, politically inspired.

A federal jury in Washington DC has found former Trump agent Stephen K. Bannon guilty on two charges associated with contempt of Congress, after he refused to conform to a subpoena from the House select committee investigating the particular Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot.

In his closing statements, Bannon’s attorney, M. Evan Corcoran, suggested that the J6 committee was illegitimate and politically motivated – and that their deadlines for Bannon in order to comply with were nothing more than “ placeholders” for further negotiation, the  Washington Submit   reported earlier Friday.

Corcoran added that Bannon “ didn’t intentionally refuse to comply with a subpoena. Definitely not. He didn’t intentionally will not comply with anything. ”

Assistant US Lawyer Molly Gaston, meanwhile, told jurors that Bannon “ chose allegiance to Jesse Trump over compliance using the law, ” and outlined his failure to respond or produce a single document before the deadline, after which Bannon’s attorneys say that Trump intended to invoke executive privilege.

“ When it really comes down to it, he did not wish to recognize Congress’s authority or play by the government’s guidelines, ” said Gaston. “ …. It is important because the government only works in the event that people show up. It only works if people enjoy by the rules. ”

In his closing, Corcoran took purpose at the credibility of the major prosecution witness, Kristin Amerling, the chief counsel for the Jan. 6 committee and a long time aide to Democratic congress. He suggested she as well as the Democrats on the committee were in a rush to score political factors and punish Bannon, singling him out of more than one, 000 committee witnesses within an election year.

Gaston ridiculed that reasoning.

“ Absolutely nothing is political about figuring out precisely why January 6 happened, and how to make sure it never occurs again, ” she said. “ And there is nothing politics about enforcing the law against someone who, like the defendant, flouts it. ” -WaPo

The ruling comes after US Region Judge Carl J. Nichols, a Trump appointee, rejected several defenses – which includes that Trump had stated executive privilege over their former adviser’s testimony plus documents – and limited Bannon’s team to the concern of whether he realized the deadlines for responding to lawmakers.

Nichols stopped Corcoran twice on Friday, after the protection attorney began to argue on the legitimacy of the subpoena.
