YouTube announced it will begin cracking down on “ abortion misinformation” by eliminating videos with false statements.
“ Starting today and ramping up over the next couple weeks, we will remove content that delivers instructions for unsafe abortion methods or promotes fake claims about abortion safety under our medical misinformation policies, ” the company tweeted on Thursday.
YouTube said that it would also launch an “ information panel, ” that will provide “ viewers along with context and information through local and global health authorities. ” The -panel will include links to “ learn more” as well as guidelines to “ consult your local medical authority for guidance. The information panel will appear over relevant search results and beneath videos related to abortion.
Providing an example of how the panel can look, the platform showed the Nationwide Library of Medicine’s definition of abortion.
“ Like all of our policies upon health/medical topics, we depend on published guidance from wellness authorities, ” YouTube stated on Thursday. “ We all prioritize connecting people to articles from authoritative sources upon health topics, and we consistently review our policies & products as real-world events unfold. ”
In recent months, YouTube’s parent corporation Google has been criticized simply by legislators for its failure in order to censor search results that mislead people looking for abortion providers to pro-life reproductive care centers.
