Swiss Police Chief Fears Social Unrest From Winter Energy Shortages

“Imagine, you can no longer pull away money at the ATM, you can no longer pay with the credit card in the store or refuel your own tank at the gas train station. “

The Switzerland government is preparing quickly for the possibility of power disadvantages this winter with Jan Flü ckiger, Secretary General of the Energy Directors’ Meeting, warning that  “ internal security then becomes a issue, ”   arguing that  the federal government has not yet acknowledged the urgency in this regard.

In an interview with  Swiss German-language daily newspaper Blick ,   Fredy Fä ssler, the Police Chief of one of Switzerland’s largest Cantons, cautioned that people may revolt and resort to looting when the Alpine nation is hit by a severe energy crisis this winter.

“ Imagine, you can no longer withdraw money at the ATM, you can no longer pay with the card in the store or even refuel your tank on the gas station.   Heating system stops working. It’s cold. Streets go dark. It really is conceivable that the population would certainly rebel or that there would be looting, ” he stated, adding that the country’s authorities should take measures to prepare for such extreme situations.

Exercises that were conducted in 2014 to prepare for a blackout situation revealed major shortcomings, including lack of emergency generators for police, hospitals and other important infrastructure and services, this individual said.

“ These shortcomings are already corrected in recent years, ” the police chief noted, adding instead ominously that  now “ the security forces are armed” and his agency is even prepared to provide the Swiss along with cash  if they are unable to use cards in stores, given that related agreements with banks are already signed.

Additionally , Fä ssler  cautioned of looting:

“ I may want to paint the devil on the wall, but it is seen in environmental disasters that  certain people have abused the problem to plunder unprotected items.   This could also be the case if the network is switched off, for example in shops high is something to buy. ”

Yet he  warned the federal government to not over-step its tyrannical orders  pre-emptively and expected police support:

“ I appeal to the us government to  only order measures that can be implemented  and, most importantly, controlled.   We certainly won’t become the sauna police. ”

Earlier , Werner Luginbuhl, the head of Switzerland’s electricity regulator ElCom, complained that  electricity was being used “ completely without consideration , ” and  urged citizens to stock up on candles and firewood   due to achievable power outages in the country this winter.

There has been a   surge in searches in Switzerland for ‘ brennholz’ (firewood)

Fã ssler’s comments come after Swiss authorities said last week that they may place restrictions on energy consumption this coming wintertime, signaling that  “ strength shortages [are] among the most serious risks” for your landlocked country.

This is Swiss officials caution of revolt and urging its people to gather firewood… not central Parisian market leaders or Baltimore politicians!!!
