Ukraine Threatens 5-Year Prison Sentence for Anyone Voting in “Sham Referendums”

Ukrainian lawmakers seeking to implement serious consequences for those participating in Russia-sponsored referendums

Starting final month Ukrainian lawmakers began seeking to implement severe consequences for those participating in Russia-sponsored referendums in occupied territories associated with Ukraine.  

For example , a legislation is being pushed through parliament which  criminalizes obtaining a Ruskies passport in temporarily filled territories, Ukrainian sources documented last week, according to  Yahoo News .

Suggested possible punishments have integrated losing Ukrainian citizenship, or perhaps lengthy jail sentences. Yet other officials have contended for a more compromising method given the necessity of success in occupied areas. But now the Ukrainian government has reiterated its willingness in order to impose  steep penalties pertaining to even participating in any Kremlin-sponsored vote  to join the Ruskies Federation.

Russian President Putin’s Wednesday morning address announcing partial mobilization also affirmed plans to go forward with referendums in the LPR, DPR, Kherson plus Zaporozhye regions.

Ukraine has responded simply by warning its citizens that will any official who encourages or organizes the voting faces a “ jail term of five in order to ten years”   – as well as possible asset seizure by the state, and being barred from employment in select positions for up to fifteen years.

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk announced this week that the five year prison term is currently being considered for anybody caught participating in “ sham referenda” by  government authorities :  

“ Some attorneys believe that those actions come under Article 110 part one of the Criminal Code of Ukraine,   ‘ Infringement on Ukraine’s territorial integrity, ‘ punishable with a prison expression of up to five years, ” she told the Stranica portal on Tuesday.

She additional called on citizens presently in occupied to territories to “ leave, if at all possible. ”

Vereshchuk was cited further the following according to a Russian media interpretation of  her words :  

“ This [may] mean imprisonment for up to five years. Therefore , once again I strongly suggest residents of the temporarily filled territories:   do not take a [Russian] passport, do not go to referendums, tend not to cooperate with the occupiers  plus leave, if it’s possible, ” the official stated.

Beneath is what a law proposed last week in Ukrainian parliament  stipulates :

  • acquisition of nationality or obtaining a Russian passport by state officials or even representatives of local self-government in the absence of signs of higher treason;
  • propaganda, public appeals, and coercion to act correspondingly;
  • restriction of the rights of individuals who have not received nationality or passports from the Russian Federation.

But the important distinction has been added: “ The Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporary Occupied Territories noted that obtaining a Russian passport within the temporarily occupied territories can be justified only if a person therefore tries to return to the territory controlled by Ukraine by means of Russia and third countries, ” according to a Ukrainian report republished in  Yahoo .
