In a massive policy about-face, 30 House Democrats are actually urging the Biden program to reconsider its hardline approach to the Ukraine turmoil, noting Biden’s escalatory policy toward Russia is taking a chance on the Democrats’ midterm potential clients.
In a letter Monday led simply by Congressional Progressive Caucus chair Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash. ), the 30 Democrats call on Biden to work toward a “ ceasefire” with Russia.
“ Given the destruction created by this war for Ukraine and the world, as well as the risk of catastrophic escalation, we also believe it is in the interests of Ukraine, the United States, as well as the world to avoid a prolonged conflict, ” the letter states.
“ For this reason, we urge you to pair the military plus economic support the United States has furnished to Ukraine with a proactive diplomatic push, redoubling initiatives to seek a realistic framework for any ceasefire. This is consistent with your own recognition that ‘ there may be going to have to be a negotiated settlement here, ‘ and your concern that Vladimir Putin ‘ doesn’t have a way out right now, and I’m trying to puzzle out what we do about that. ‘”
Jayapal reiterated her colleagues’ new position to the Washington Post, arguing that Biden now has to seek a “ proactive diplomatic push” toward serenity with Russia.
“ The longer the war in Ukraine continues on, the greater the risk of escalation — to widespread, devastating impact, ” Jayapal said in a statement to The Washington Post. “ We should have no illusions about the challenge ahead of all of us, but… my colleagues and I are urging the Management to engage in a proactive diplomatic push in an effort to seek a realistic framework for a ceasefire. ”
The letter included signatures from most of the far-left “ Squad, ” including Ilhan Omar (D-Minn. ) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N. Y. ), as well as other prominent liberals like Jamie Rasksin (D-Md. ) and Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas).
The letter marks a significant departure from your Democrats’ “ as long as it takes” stance on the Ukraine conflict, previously supporting sanctions and energy embargoes towards Russia, escalatory arms exchanges to Ukraine, and even calls for a preemptive nuclear hit against Russia.
Recall that every single Home Democrat last May voted for the $40 billion spending bill that effectively received the U. S. much deeper into war with Russian federation, with 57 House Conservatives voting against.
But Biden’s funneling billions of dollars and weapons to Ukraine and dismissing negotiations with Russia has amplified America’s energy crisis in order to such a point that his Ukraine policy is now harming Democrats’ chances to win the midterm elections.
For example , Ocasio-Cortez (D-N. Y. ) was confronted by angry constituents earlier this particular month for supporting Biden’s endless Ukraine war plan amid massive domestic downturn driven by record-high pumpiing.
“ The reason why can’t you be more like Tulsi Gabbard? ” one voter asked, referring to anti-war former Democrat congresswoman. “ You ran as an outsider, yet you’ve been voting to start this war in Ukraine. You’re voting to start a third nuclear war with Russia and China. ”
