The UN’s high commissioner for human rights, Volker Tü rk, has sent an open notice to Twitter ‘s new owner Elon Musk, asking him to make sure that Twitter respects human legal rights and monitors hate speech and misinformation.

In the notice, Tü rk said he was writing with “ concern and apprehension about our digital public sq . and Twitter’s role in it. ”
Tü rk also said that there is a need to monitor hate speech and disinformation, noting that free speech should not be a “ free pass. ”
“ Such as all companies, Twitter needs to understand the harms associated with the platform and take steps to address them, ” Tü rk wrote.
“ Respect for our shared individual rights should set the guardrails for the platform’s use and evolution. In short, I urge you to ensure human being rights are central towards the management of Twitter under your leadership. ”
He also said that Tweets should respect people’s legal rights to “ fullest level possible under applicable laws” and to publish transparency reviews on government pressure to infringe on people’s rights.
The EL official also warned about so-called misinformation and detest speech.
“ Twitter has a responsibility to prevent amplifying content that leads to harms to people’s legal rights, ” Tü rk stated. “ There is no place designed for hatred that incites elegance, hostility or violence upon Twitter.
