A policy drafted by the San Francisco Law enforcement Department has sent the petition to the city’s Plank of Supervisors which would  allow  police officers to deploy robots with the intent to eliminate suspects  in situations exactly where “ risk of loss of life to members of the public or even officers is imminent and outweighs any other force choice available to SFPD, ”   Engadget reports, citing  Mission Nearby .

Where have all of us seen this one before?

According to  Mission Local , the particular draft proposal has already obtained significant pushback from each within and outside of the Panel – including supervisor Aaron Peskin, who initially resisted the idea until he placed language which would completely neuter the death-bots.

“ Robots shall not be used as a Use of Push against any person, ” he wrote, which the SFPD after that removed in a subsequent set up.

The police force presently maintains a dozen fully-functional remote-controlled robots , which are usually used for area inspections plus bomb disposal. However ,   as the Dallas PD showed in 2016 , they make excellent bomb shipping platforms as well. Bomb fingertips units are often equipped with empty shotgun shells used to intentionally disrupt an explosive device’s internal workings, though  there is nothing stopping police by using live rounds if they required,   as Oakland police recently acknowledged to that city’s civilian oversight table. -Engadget
