NYC Backtracks on Face Masks After Masked Man Brutally Executes Bodega Shopkeeper
‘As a sign of safety to store workers, when we walk in we should take down our masks,’ says police chief.
Authorities in New York City are asking residents to stop wearing face masks inside delis after a bodega worker was brutally executed by a masked assailant – a staunch about-face from the city’s draconian Covid-era mask mandates.
On Monday, NYPD reissued a call for bodega owners to institute bans on customers wearing face masks as they still have not caught the masked man suspected of robbing several other delis and shooting a 67-year-old bodega store clerk in the head.
“We were… [in Queens] last Wednesday discussing a very similar type of incident where a person was robbed, and during that press conference I made a plea to store owners as a condition of employment to have people remove their masks,” Police Chief Jeffrey Maddrey stated at a press conference Monday held outside the Daona Gourmet Deli and Grocery where the bodega worker was shot and killed last Friday.
“And four days later someone enters a store late at night with a mask and a hood.. and rubber gloves on. And now we have a person a store clerk a hard-working innocent person who’s gone now.”
“I’m going to double down on that plea again for one store owners commercial establishments especially if you’re using a buzzer system in some common-sense approach have people as a condition of employment show their face, remove their mask so that you know you’re safe.
“But then again I’ll put it to all New Yorkers: we have an obligation to make sure these store owners feel safe as well, so as a sign of a peace offering, a sign of safety to those store workers, when we walk in we should take down our masks, we should let them know that they’re not in any danger or harm, that we’re customers and we’re here to help them.
“Again,” he continued, “once you show the store owner who you are and that everything’s ok if you don’t feel comfortable in the store without your mask on due to the amount of people in there by all means put it back on.”
CBS2 reports: “Police say the suspect came in just before midnight wearing a white suit and a dark face mask. We’re told he pistol whipped the 67-year-old clerk before shooting him in the head.”
According to Fox 5 NY: “A police source tells FOX 5 that the haunting disguise worn by the shooter fits the same description of the man who robbed a Bronx bodega on Melrose Avenue at gunpoint 30 minutes later.”
Interviewed about the murder, one New Yorker blamed the masks for allowing people to get away with criminal acts, telling CBS2, “The masks are becoming a hindrance, and they are allowing people to get away with not just murder but also shoplifting.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams reiterated NYPD’s call to ban masks Monday, urging shop owners not to allow customers who won’t lower their face masks.
“We are putting out a clear call to all of our shops, do not allow people to enter the store without taking off their face mask,” Adams told the 1010 WINS New York radio station. “And then once they’re inside, they can continue to wear it if they so desire to do so.”
Police are offering a $10,000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect.
“The United Bodegas of America is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the murderer,” according to Fox5.
The request to remove the once-ubiquitous masks comes as New York City no less than three years ago instituted tyrannical mask policies for residents visiting indoor public spaces, with then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) issuing an executive order in April 2020 mandating New Yorkers wear face coverings throughout the city.
The city additionally imposed fines of up to $1,000 for people who refused to wear masks.
Who could have predicted criminals would take advantage of the normalization of face-concealing masks to go commit crimes without fear of being identified?
